The local hospital and other compassionate agencies provide select diagnostic services by writing off costs of tests that can be done in-house.

Mission/Goal/history :

To help meet the health care needs of the uninsured, without geographical boundaries.

In the 1980's meeting the health needs of the uninsured was becoming increasingly difficult. A free medical clinic was started in Orland Maine, but services were curtailed upon the death of their medical provider. Then in 1993, Dr. Leonidas Hayes graciously donated his office at his home on Bayview Avenue in Ellsworth one day a week for the Ellsworth Free Medical Clinic. Due to demand and growth, more space was neede, necessitating the move from Bayview Avenue in 2003. The Free Clinic is currently located (as of 2005) at the Mill Mall in Ellsworth, 248 State Street, suite 16 -- Across the hall from the entrance to Sylvia's Cafe.

The mission of the Ellsworth Free Medical Clinis is to imporve the health care of persons, families and communities within Hancock and surrounding counties. Strategies include provision of free medical services for those without insurance and assiatance in accessing programs and resources for medical and othe rlife necessities for those who are medically under-served.
